上曰。亦未嘗欠闕。師奏曰。臣每於入室時常問衲云。如何是斬新一句。擬議劈胸便打。有時問云。如何是向上一路。未開口也打。

His Majesty said, "Neither has it ever been lacking." The Master memorialized, saying, "Whenever I enter the abbot's room, I often ask the patch-robed monks, 'What is a brand-new phrase?' If they hesitate, I strike them right across the chest. Sometimes I ask, 'What is the road going beyond?' Even before they open their mouths, I also strike them."
