Chan Master Zhaojue Che'an Daoyuan of Chengdu Prefecture was a son of the Deng family of Mianzhou. In his youth, he took full ordination at Jiangji Temple. Travelling east, he called upon Chan Master Dabie Dao. While contemplating the phrase 'Vast emptiness, nothing holy', he suddenly burst into laughter, saying, 'Bodhidharma was originally right here!' Dao praised him. He went to consult Fogian and Foyan, receiving their appreciation. He relied on Yuanwu at Jinshan and reported what he had seen, but Yuanwu did not approve it. When Yuanwu was summoned by imperial decree to reside at Yunju, the Master followed him. Although he had reached faith and entry, he was ultimately troubled by a doubt that the fishbone stuck in his throat had not been removed. It happened that Yuanwu asked the practitioners, 'When birth and death arrive, what then?' A monk said, 'The incense stand laughs at the Upādhyāya.' Next he asked the Master, 'What about you?' The Master said, 'The grass-bandits suffer a great defeat.' Yuanwu said, 'When someone asks you, what then?' The Master was about to reply, when Yuanwu pressed upon him, 'The grass-bandits suffer a great defeat!' The Master immediately attained thorough realization. Yuanwu struck him with his fist. The Master clapped his hands and laughed heartily. Yuanwu said, 'What did you see that makes you like this?' The Master said, 'The poisonous fist has not been repaid; I will never forget it for eternal kalpas.' When Yuanwu returned to Zhaojue, he appointed him head of the assembly. When Yuanwu was about to pass away, he had the Master succeed to his seat.
