Chan Master Zeming of Letan in Longxing Prefecture ascended the hall and cited the nidāna of Zhaozhou visiting Zhuyu to probe the water. The Master said, "Old Zhao's clouds gather, the mountain peaks appear; Zhuyu's rain clears, the bamboo breeze is pure. In whose other villa's pond could a pair of mandarin ducks fail to be painted?" He also cited Deshan carrying his bowl. The Master said, "From the start, the child of a wealthy house is pampered, leaning especially toward the river to play with the painted oar. Inducing the old father beyond control, he too comes aboard the boat to join in the singing." Ascending the hall: "Yongjia said, 'One moon appears universally in all waters; all waters' moons are gathered into one moon.'" Raising his whisk, he said, "Look, look! A thousand rivers compete in pouring, ten thousand streams vie in flowing. If you are already skilled at navigating a boat and understand the water's veins, you can leisurely roam the ocean of nature and laugh proudly among the misty waves. If this is not yet so, return for now to sit beneath the forest and wait further for when the moon is bright."
