Chan Master Dawei Yue'an Shanguo of Tanzhou was a native of the Yu family of Xinzhou. He ascended the hall [and said], "Xi Zhong made a carriage with a hundred spokes. Take away both ends, remove the axle." Using his staff, he drew a circle and said, "Just do not mistake the mark on the steelyard!" He struck [with his staff] once and stepped down from the seat. Thanking the head of provisions, he ascended the hall: "Untying the golden bell beneath the fierce tiger's chin startles the crowd and stirs the assembly. Taking the bright pearl from within the blue dragon's cave illuminates heaven and shines upon the earth. The mountain monk's coming here today is beyond praise. What should all of you do?" He held up his whisk and said, "Blink your eyebrows and swiftly comprehend!" He threw down his whisk and stepped down from the seat. He ascended the hall: "'When the mind arises, phenomena also arise; when the mind ceases, phenomena also cease.' When mind and phenomena are both forgotten, a black tortoise is called a turtle. Can you Chan worthies say it? If you can say it, Daolin will give you a staff; if not yet so, go back to the hall and drink tea." A monk asked, "What was it like when Bodhidharma sat facing the wall for nine years?" The master said, "When fish swim, the water becomes muddy." [The monk] asked, "Why did the Second Patriarch attain his marrow by making three bows?" The master said, "When the soil is rich, the eggplants are large." [The monk] asked, "What matter is clarified by 'A single flower blossoms with five petals, and the bearing of fruit comes naturally to completion'?" The master said, "A thief is verified by the stolen goods." [The monk] said, "'Sometimes riding the fine moon, unaware of passing Cangzhou.'" The master said, "The ācārya has no part in it." [The monk] asked, "What is it like when 'Phrased or unphrased, it is like a vine clinging to a tree'?" The master said, "Completely testing the expert." [The monk] said, "When the tree falls and the vine withers, where does the phrase go, and what about then?" The master said, "Blown by the wind, scorched by the sun." [The monk] said, "What about Guishan's hearty laughter?" The master said, "A Persian reading Sanskrit characters." [The monk] said, "Daowu pushed him into the mud, and Guishan paid no heed; what about this intention?" The master said, "Having reason does not depend on a loud voice." [The monk] said, "Luoshan said, 'Daowu is a fellow who scoops horse dung.' What about that?" The master said, "A talkative master." [The monk] said, "Today we fully see the Old Teacher's complete penetration in all directions." The master said, "Looking up, crying to the azure heaven." The monk bowed. The master said, "Passed." [The monk] asked, "What is it like before the lotus emerges from the water?" The master said, "Heaven and earth have no different colors." [The monk] asked, "What about after emerging from the water?" The master said, "The entire world has a pure fragrance."
