Chan Master Qing of Penglai in Mingzhou ascended the hall: "'Being with words or being without words is like a vine clinging to a tree.' For now, let everyone in all directions nod their heads. When the tree falls and the vine withers, above there is no scheme to soar into the sky, and below there is no stratagem to enter the earth. If a sharp fellow can plant an eye right here, he will see seven verticals and eight horizontals." Raising his whisk, he said, "Look, look! 'One tune, two tunes, and no one understands; / The rain has passed over the night pond, and the autumn waters are deep.'" Ascending the hall: "Amid the cuckoo's calls, spring's light draws late; / Fallen flowers cover the ground, impossible to detain. / On the lapis lazuli palace, all footprints are severed; / Who knows how to plant a rootless tree?" Raising his staff, he said, "This is the rootless one. Tell me, does it know how to blossom or not?" After a long pause, he said, "Only because of the continuous night rain, / Another year's spring has passed." Ascending the hall, he cited: "Fayan said, 'Recognizing the citron, everything is more than complete.' Yunmen said, 'Recognizing the citron, heaven and earth are as far apart as can be.'" The Master said, "These two old masters: one stands atop the highest mountain peak, the other walks along the deepest ocean floor. Even though it is so, one is not, and two does not succeed. 'Warblers cry amid falling flowers and flowing water; / Rain ceases at the quiet pavilion as night approaches midnight; / A sliver of moon rises once more from the ocean bed.'"
