Chan Master Dadao Guquan of the Bajiao Hermitage on Mount Nanyue was a man of Quanzhou. Having received the Dharma from Fenyang, he roamed freely through the Xiang and Hu regions. Later he visited his fellow student, Chan Master Ciming. Ciming asked, "White clouds lie across the valley mouth; from where does the man of the Way come?" The Master looked left and right and said, "Where was the fire last night that burned open an ancient tomb?" Ciming said, "Not yet; speak further." The Master made the sound of a tiger. Ciming struck him with his sitting cloth. The Master caught hold of it and pushed Ciming onto the meditation platform. Ciming then made the sound of a tiger. The Master laughed heartily and said, "I have met over seventy kalyāṇamitras; today for the first time I have encountered an adept!" Once, because Elder Yiyu came to call (Yiyu later resided at Fachang), [Yiyu] asked, "Is the hermitage master in?" The Master said, "Who is it?" [Yiyu] said, "A traveling monk on pilgrimage." The Master said, "What are you doing?" [Yiyu] said, "Bowing to the hermitage master." The Master said, "It just so happens that the hermitage master is not here." [Yiyu] said, "What about you?" The Master said, "I told you he is not here! What are you talking about, 'you' and 'me'?" He grabbed his staff and drove him out. The next day Yiyu came again, and the Master drove him out again. One day Yiyu came again and asked, "Is the hermitage master in?" The Master said, "Who is it?" [Yiyu] said, "A traveling monk on pilgrimage." Raising the curtain, he walked straight in. The Master grabbed him across the chest and said, "Here tigers and wolves roam wild! What are you coming back for, two or three times, you bed-wetting ghost?" [Yiyu] said, "People say the hermitage master personally met Fenyang." The Master untied his robe, shook it out, and said, "Tell me, what was so extraordinary about my meeting Fenyang?" [Yiyu] asked, "What is the master within the hermitage?" The Master said, "Upon entering the gate, you must discern it." [Yiyu] said, "Could it be just this?" The Master said, "How many people has this led astray!" [Yiyu] said, "Where are your former words?" The Master said, "Listening inaccurately, you mistake a bell for an earthen jar." [Yiyu] said, "'When the ten thousand dharmas vanish, the complete body appears; where ruler and minister unite, it goes right into the middle of crookedness.'" The Master said, "Donkey-fellow! If you do not understand, just stop. Why make such a mess?" [Yiyu] asked, "I wonder, when a guest arrives, with what will you entertain him?" The Master said, "Yunmen's sesame cake, Zhaozhou's tea." [Yiyu] said, "If so, then I thank the master for the hospitality and depart." The Master scolded him, saying, "Here I do not even have a spark of fire, yet you already speak of thanking me for hospitality!" Because of a heavy snowfall, the Master composed a verse saying: 'Today the snow is exceedingly fine, / Drifting down like the autumn moon. / Mañjuśrī does not stick out his head; / Samantabhadra displays clumsiness and flaws.' When Ciming moved to reside at Fuyan, the Master went again to visit him. After staying briefly, he returned and composed a verse sent to him: 'Having parted from each other, it has now been half a year; / I wonder with whom you sit and discuss Chan. / The same fine scenery in the Xiang mountains: / You lead your assembly; I take my sleep.' When Ciming read it, he merely smiled.
