唐州大乘山慧果禪師。僧問。如何是從上來傳底意。師曰。金盤拓出眾人看。問撥塵見佛時如何。師曰。撥塵即乖見佛即錯。曰總不如是時如何。師曰錯。問如何是道。師曰。寬處寬窄處窄。曰如何是道中人。師曰。苦處若樂處樂。曰道與道中人相去多少。師曰。十萬八千。問如何是祖師西來意。曰天晴日出。曰學人不會。師曰。雨下泥生。

Chan Master Huiguo of Mount Dacheng in Tangzhou. A monk asked: 'What is the intention transmitted from of old?' The Master said: 'Brought out on a golden tray for everyone to see.' [A monk] asked: 'How is it when brushing away the dust to see the Buddha?' The Master said: 'Brushing away the dust deviates; seeing the Buddha is an error.' [The monk] said: 'How is it when not doing either at all?' The Master said: 'An error.' [A monk] asked: 'What is the Way?' The Master said: 'Where it is wide, it is wide; where it is narrow, it is narrow.' [The monk] said: 'Who is the person within the Way?' The Master said: 'Where it is bitter, it is bitter; where it is joyful, it is joyful.' [The monk] said: 'How far apart are the Way and the person within the Way?' The Master said: 'A hundred and eight thousand [li].' [A monk] asked: 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' [The Master] said: 'The sky clears and the sun comes out.' [The monk] said: 'Your student does not understand.' The Master said: 'Rain falls and mud is born.'
