潭州石霜法永禪師。僧問。如何是佛。師曰。臂長衫袖短。問如何是祖師西來意。師曰。布袴勝頭穿。

Chan Master Fayong of Shishuang in Tanzhou. A monk asked, "What is the Buddha?" The Master said, "The arms are long, the sleeves of the robe are short." The monk asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "Cotton trousers worn over the head."
