Chan Master Chichan Yuanmiao of Zhongzhu in Lin'an Prefecture was from the Wang family of Wuzhou. A monk asked, "What is the phrase that cuts off the myriad streams?" The Master said, "Buddhas and patriarchs have no share in opening their mouths." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase that covers heaven and earth?" The Master said, "Encompassing the earth and blanketing heaven." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase that follows the waves and pursues the billows?" The Master said, "At times entering the wild grasses, at times ascending the solitary peak." Ascending the hall, [he said], "At dusk the rooster announces dawn; / At midnight the sun shines bright. / Startling awake the snow lion, / It opens wide its red eyes." Ascending the hall, [he said], "Last year's plums, this year's willows—their colors and fragrance!" He gave a shout. After a long pause, he said, "If not for this shout, I would have almost spoken as of old. Tell me: after speaking of it, what then? The eyes pop out."
