Chan Master Shantang Sengxun of Gushan in Fuzhou was a son of the Ruan family in that same prefecture. Ascending the hall, [he said], "The sixty blows in Huangbo's hand did not understand the essential meaning of the Buddha Dharma, yet they confirmed it slightly. Dayu jabbed three punches into his ribs, and he immediately said, 'Huangbo's Buddha Dharma does not amount to much'—what a let-down to people! You should know there is a person who, even when a great stick strikes him over the head, does not turn around, and when an old fist punches him in the face, does not pay it any mind. Tell me, who is this?" Ascending the hall, [he said], "The north wind sweeps the ground, whirling yellow leaves; / Outside the gate, a thousand peaks show their shivering, cold hue. / At midnight a tortoise flies bearing snow; / By the stream, the stone woman knits her two brows." Striking his staff, he said, "Everyone is right here. Tell me: is heaven cold, or is man cold?" Giving a shout, he said, "Return to the hall!"
