The Duke of Wending, Upāsaka Hu Anguo, [known as] Cao'an, courtesy name Kanghou, long relied on Shangfeng and attained the meaning beyond words. During the Chongning era, he passed through Yaoshan. A Chan practitioner brought up Nanquan's killing of the cat and asked the gentleman about it. The gentleman answered with a gāthā: / "Grasping in hand heaven and earth's mechanism of killing and enlivening, / Deploying it freely, whether vertically or horizontally, according to the moment. / In the Jade Hall, hares and horses are not dragons and elephants; / Of the majestic great function, they know nothing at all." / He also sent a poem to Shangfeng, which had the lines: / "Zhurong Peak resembles the sky of Ducheng; / The rivers and mountains of ten thousand ages are before our eyes. / One must believe that the dead mind is fundamentally not dead; / Last night the autumn moon was round once again."
