Chan Master Deshan Wuzheng Huichu of Changde Prefecture was a native of Jingjiang Prefecture. Ascending the hall, he looked around at the assembly and said, "Do you see? In heaven it forms images; on earth it forms shapes. In the sun and moon, it is the dark phase and the new moon; in the four seasons, it is cold and heat. It is stirred by thunder and lightning; it is moistened by wind and rain. Tell me: in the share of a patch-robed monk, what is it like? / With a single kick, the four great oceans are overturned; / With a single fist, Mount Sumeru is knocked down. / Unable to remain in the position of buddhas and patriarchs, / Again blowing a fisherman's flute at the bend of the Miluo River." Ascending the hall: "The twenty-fifth day of the ninth month; gathering heads to bring this up together. Gouge out the treasury of the true Dharma eye; sweep away the universal assembly of Yunmen. Deshan cannot speak of Chan, / But wins village songs and communal dances. / Ah, ha-ha, luolili!" Thereupon he danced and descended from the seat.
