Chan Master Zhijian of Xuedou in Mingzhou was a son of the Wu family in Chuzhou. When he was a child, his mother washed an ulcer on his hand and asked: 'What is this?' He replied: 'My hand is like a Buddha's hand.' When grown, having lost his parents, he relied upon Zhenxie at Changlu. Daxiu, as head of the assembly, recognized his capacity. Later he secluded himself on Xiangshan; none of the hundred apparitions could delude him, and in the depth of the night he attained awakening. Seeking confirmation from Yanshou Ran, he again visited Daxiu. After becoming abbot, he ascended the hall: 'The Bhagavat had secret words, and Kāśyapa did not conceal them. A night of falling flowers and rain; through the whole city the flowing waters are fragrant.'
