Chan Master Wei'an Daoqin of Guangfu in Taizhou was a son of the Yu family of that prefecture. Ascending the hall, he brought up: 'A monk asked Tong'an: "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?" Tong'an said: "The golden rooster cradles its chick and returns to the firmament; the jade rabbit conceives and enters the Purple Tenuity." The monk said: "If a guest suddenly arrives, how do you receive him?" Tong'an said: "Golden fruit picked by monkeys in the morning court; jade blossoms brought in the phoenix's beak after dusk." The Master said: 'Guangfu would not do it like that. If someone asks, "What is the Upādhyāya's house style?", I would merely say to him: "Singing the boatman's song by the thicket of emerald bamboo; lying amid misty vines deep in the green crags." "If a guest suddenly arrives, how do you receive him?" "A bottomless basket holding the bright moon; a mindless bowl storing the pure breeze."'
