Chan Master Siye of Wenshu in Changde Prefecture came from a family of butchers. One day, while slaughtering a pig, he suddenly penetrated to the mind-source. He immediately abandoned his profession and became a monk. He composed a verse:
'Yesterday, the mind of a yakṣa;
This morning, the face of a bodhisattva.
Between a bodhisattva and a yakṣa,
Not a single thread separates them.'
He went to see Wenshu. Shu said, 'When you were slaughtering the pig, what did you see that made you shave your head and go on pilgrimage?' The Master then made the gesture of wielding a butcher knife. Shu shouted, 'This butcher—go to the practice hall!' The Master then stepped down and went to the practice hall. When he resided at Wenshu, he ascended the hall and, citing Zhaozhou's examination of the old woman, said: 'Having seen through the old woman, her face was blue and her eyes were black. That old fellow Zhaozhou could not deceive me.'
