Chan Master Daoneng of Lianyun in Chuzhou was a native of Hanzhou, surnamed He. A monk asked: “What is the meaning of Jingqing's six scrapings?”
The Master said: “Piercing through your nostrils.”
The monk said: “If the student has nostrils, they are pierced. If there are no nostrils, what is pierced?”
The Master said: “Holding stolen goods and crying injustice.”
He asked: “What is scraping the dust from the fur?”
The Master said: “In Jun, Yuan, Qian, and Ji, pens are stuck in their hair.”
He asked: “What is scraping the fur from the skin?”
The Master said: “In Shicheng and Qianhua, speech is mutual cursing.”
He asked: “What is scraping the skin from the flesh?”
The Master said: “In Jia, Mei, Guo, and Lang, petitions are held in the bosom.”
He asked: “What is scraping the flesh from the bone?”
The Master said: “In Zhang, Quan, and Fujian, heads are flat like fans.”
He asked: “What is scraping the bone from the marrow?”
The Master said: “On Yanglan and Zuoli, waves rise without wind.”
He asked: “How then is the marrow scraped?”
The Master said: “Eighteen, nineteen—fools running by night.”
He asked: “The six scrapings have already been pointed out by the Master; what is the meaning of a direct, cutting word?”
The Master said: “A share of tongue-tying.”
Chan Master Zui'an Daoyin of Lingyin in Lin'an Prefecture was a native of Hanzhou. Ascending the hall, he said: “The tiger below Mount Daxiong; the blunt-nosed viper of the South Mountain: when encountering them casually, carry your reward and return home. If you do not spare your fine hands, then pull out their extra teeth! Is there anyone? Is there anyone?”
Ascending the hall, he said: “Five times five is twenty-five; smash the drum of empty space! The great earth cannot admit a needle; in the ten directions there is not an inch of soil. Spring generates and summer grows—what more is there to say? What is sweet is sweet; what is bitter is bitter.”
Ascending the hall on Mid-Autumn, he brought up the gong'an of Master Ma admiring the moon with Xitang, Baizhang, and Nanquan. The Master said: “Master Ma hung a thousand-foot line, his intention in the deep pool. Xitang shook his dorsal fin; Baizhang wagged his tail. Although they dashed the waves and stirred the billows, they could not avoid taking his hook and line. Nanquan thought of himself as having leapt over the Yu Gate; who knew he fell back into the giant net as before? Right now, is there anyone who breaks through the cage and escapes the rut? It would be good to come out and reveal some news, so that it is known the gate of the Flower Treasury is not left desolate. If not yet so:
Tonight the single disk is full;
Where is the clear light absent?”
