Judicial Commissioner Upāsaka Wu Weiming, courtesy name Yuanzhao, had long studied under Chan Master Zhenxie Liao and took the attainment of the self-enjoyment samādhi as the ultimate. Later, he visited Dahui at Yangyu Hermitage and followed the assembly into the abbot's room. Dahui brought up the gong'an of the dog having no Buddha-nature to question him. As the gentleman was about to answer, Dahui struck him with a bamboo comb. The gentleman could not answer, so he remained to consult and study. One day Dahui said to him: 'There is no need to display your clever tricks; you must snap it cleanly and break it completely before you can withstand birth and death. If you merely display tricks, when will there ever be an end?' Thereupon he took his leave. On the road to Yanping, he suddenly attained awakening. He wrote several verses in succession and sent them to Dahui, all concerning what had been asked in the room. One said: 'Not mind, not Buddha, not things; / The entire body is a set of golden collarbones. / Zhaozhou personally saw old Nanquan, / And knew how to say that Zhenzhou produces radishes.' Dahui immediately recited a verse to verify it: 'The entire body is a set of golden collarbones, / Fit to be a standard for humans and devas. / If you want to recognize the lad of Linji, / He is none other than the master thief of back then.'
