遂寧府西禪第二代希秀禪師上堂。秋光將半暑氣漸消。鴻雁橫空。點破碧天似水。猿猱挂樹。撼翻玉露如珠。直饒對此明機。未免認龜作鼈。且道應時應節一句作麼生道。野色併來三島月。溪光分破五湖秋。

Chan Master Xixiu, second generation of Xichan in Suining Prefecture, ascended the hall. 'The autumn light is nearly half gone, and the summer heat gradually dissipates. Wild geese stretch across the sky, spotting and breaking the blue sky like water; monkeys hang from the trees, shaking down the jade dew like pearls. Even if you clearly perceive the pivot in facing this, you cannot avoid mistaking a turtle for a terrapin. But tell me, how will you speak a single phrase attuned to the season and the moment? / Country scenery combines the moon of the three isles; / The stream's glow breaks apart the autumn of the five lakes.'
