33.33

潭州大溈行禪師。上堂橫拄杖曰。爾等諸人若向這裏會去。如紀信登九龍之輦。不向這裏會去。似項羽失千里烏騅。饒爾總不恁麼。落在無事甲裏。若向這裏撥得一路。轉得身吐得氣。山僧與爾拄杖子。遂靠拄杖下座。上堂。不是心不是佛不是物。且道是箇甚麼。不在內不在外不在中間。畢竟在甚麼處。苦苦有口說不得。無家何處歸。

Chan Master Hang of Dagui in Tanzhou ascended the hall, held his staff horizontally, and said, 'If you people understand here, it is like Ji Xin mounting the chariot of nine dragons. If you do not understand here, it is like Xiang Yu losing his thousand-li steed, Wuzhui. Even if you do neither of these, you fall inside the armor of doing nothing. If you can clear a path here, turn your body, and exhale your breath, this mountain monk will give you the staff.' He then leaned his staff against [his seat] and stepped down. / Ascending the hall: 'It is not mind, it is not Buddha, it is not a thing. But tell me, what is it? It is not inside, it is not outside, it is not in between. Ultimately, where is it? Bitterly, bitterly, there is a mouth that cannot speak; having no home, where can one return?'
