Chan Master Xinwen Tanben of Wannian in Taizhou was a native of Yongjia. When residing at Jiangxin, he arose from illness and ascended the hall: 'Vimalakīrti's illness explained the principle fully; Longxiang's illness coughs unceasingly. Coughing unceasingly explains the principle fully; explaining the principle fully coughs unceasingly. Do you all understand the meaning in this or not? Originally, it was the long river meeting cold wind; yet it made the exposed pillar suffer from a head wind.' / Ascending the hall: 'At one glance, you immediately see—an eight-cornered millstone spins in empty space. Attained once, attained forever—cinnabar from Chenzhou and Jinzhou is as black as ink. The autumn wind blows across the Wei River—it has already fallen into Yunmen's three phrases. Fallen leaves fill Chang'an—how many are now deceived by their eyes?' Raising his whisk, he said, 'Deceived or not deceived, it is completely in the hands of Wannian. Do you see? / On Huading Peak, the moon veils the beckoning stone; / At Duanqiao Bridge, the water drops beneath the self-sacrificing cliff.' / A monk asked, 'What was the meaning of Baizhang rolling up the mat?' The Master said, 'Drawing the bow after the bandits have passed.' / The prefect of Siming appointed the Master to preside over Xuedou. The Master declined with a verse: / 'Only just glad to escape the noisy basket, / The retirement drum is now beaten without rest. / Do not take the thousand-fathom snow of Milk Peak / To come again and exchange for my pair of eyes.'
