Chan Master Dongshan Ji of Linjiang Commandery: Court Gentleman for Consultation Li, together with his nephew, Upāsaka Xianglin, the young master Xiang Yin, went to pay respects to the Master and asked: “What happens when the household thief troubles a person?” The Master said: “Who is the household thief?” Li raised his fist. The Master said: “The thief's body is already exposed.” Li said: “It is best not to muddy people.” The Master said: “The stolen goods and evidence are right here.” Li was silent. The Master instructed him with a verse: “The household thief troubles a person—who can do anything about it? / The turns of functioning of a thousand sages are only for his sake. / Pervading the realm, pervading space, without shadow or trace; / Without reliance, without abiding, completely cut off from cages and nets. / Thief, thief! / Fierce generals and mighty soldiers cannot capture him; / He puzzles the old Chan monks under heaven to death, / And makes the ancient Maitreya in the bustling market collapse in laughter. / Cease, cease! / No need to take the mind and seek outside. / Turn the head, in an instant the thief's body is exposed; / Seized together with the stolen goods, peerless in the world! / Peerless in the world, truly worthy of veneration; / Henceforth no longer boasting of tricks and skills. / When settling the family and enjoying one's livelihood in complete peace, / The myriad forms and phenomena clap their hands together in applause.”
