Chan Master Ji'an Shen of Guangxiao in Wenzhou was a native of this commandery. He ascended the hall and said: “A dragon gives birth to a dragon, a phoenix gives birth to a phoenix; a mouse raises children that scurry along the roof beams. Great Master Bodhidharma did not understand Chan; traveling through Wei and roaming Liang, he was just making a dry commotion.”

He ascended the hall: “In the first nine and second nine, when meeting one does not take one's hands out. Three nines are twenty-seven; at the hedge they blow the reed pipe. Turning back, I recall Little Śākya, holding his bent knees with both hands. Knowing or not knowing? Real or not real? Mahāprajñāpāramitā!”

He ascended the hall: “Vimalakīrti kept silent, Samantabhadra spoke extensively; the sages of past generations mutually displayed their ugliness and clumsiness. Have you not seen: as flowers fall in the third month and the cuckoo cries, every single call is a drop of blood?”

He ascended the hall: “The wind soughs, the leaves flutter; the clouds drift in flakes, the water stretches boundless. Standing alone on the riverbank, to whom can I speak? Beyond the sky fly two or three lines of wild geese.”
