Chan Master Luo'an Huiwen of Langshan in Tongzhou was a native of Fuzhou whose surname was Zheng. He studied extensively with various venerable elders, and in his later years he relied on Zhu'an at Donglin. Before long, Zhu'an retired from duties. He then visited Gao'an Wu, Nanhua Bing, and Caotang Qing, all of whom recognized his worth. It happened that Zhu'an moved to Qianyuan in Min. The master returned to visit him, whereupon Zhu'an asked, 'When emotion arises, wisdom is obstructed; when thoughts change, the substance diverges. Without stopping to deliberate to grow clever, speak a phrase!' The master was thereupon relieved of doubt and presented a verse: / 'Squeezed out, the whole body is a mouth; / What harm in cursing the rain and berating the wind? / Last night the fierce tiger of the village ahead / Bit to death the big beast of South Mountain.' / Zhu'an gave his nodding approval. After becoming an abbot, he ascended the hall: 'Old man Śākya sat planning inside the tent for forty-nine years; the Great Being Maitreya waded through mud and water for ninety-one kalpas. When ordinary sentiments and sacred measures cannot be eradicated, the illumination of principle and sensory awareness still retain open disclosures. The Buddha's intent and the Patriarchs' intent are like mistaking fish eyes for luminous pearls; the Mahāyāna and the Hīnayāna resemble taking an orange peel to be a blazing fire. All of you must fling wide open the treasure-house of your own hearts and bring out your own family treasures, bestowing them broadly on the impoverished at the crossroad! If suddenly a sharp fellow steps forth from the assembly and says, "Fine food is not fit for a full man to eat," the mountain monk would only say to him: Youzhou may still be tolerable, but Silla is the bitterest of all.'
