Chan Master Deshan Zijuan of Changde Prefecture was a native of Tongchuan. He ascended the hall: '"At the time of seeing seeing, seeing is not seeing; seeing is still separate from seeing, seeing cannot reach it." He then shouted and said, 'The whale swallows the seawater entirely, exposing the coral branch! If suddenly a patch-robed monk should come out from the assembly and say, "Venerable Elder, cease talking in your sleep!" I would grant that he possesses a single eye.' Ascending the hall, he laid his staff crosswise and said: 'One, two, three, four, five, six, seven; seven, six, five, four, three, two, one. Counting forwards and backwards in rotation, count until the endless days of the future! Because of seven, one sees one; because of one, one forgets seven. Trampling through the great void, even the iron ox breaks into a sweat! Breath cut off, without a trace.' He threw down his staff and said: 'One must further put this down, only then is the matter of study and practice complete!' Ascending the hall, he picked up his staff and said: 'Sometimes taking away the person but not taking away the environment: the staff is crisscrossing in all directions. Sometimes taking away the environment but not taking away the person: the mountain monk is topsy-turvy. Sometimes taking away both person and environment: the staff and the mountain monk obliterate their traces and swallow their voices. Sometimes taking away neither person nor environment.' Striking his staff, he said, '"Accompanying me on a journey of a thousand miles, carrying you across ten thousand mountains." If you suddenly run into Great Master Linji, what then?' He shouted and said: 'Before the mind-ground seal is clear, it is difficult to pass through the ancestral barrier.'
