35.12

東禪觀禪師。字性空。上堂舉。鹽官國師因僧問。如何是本身盧舍那。師云。與老僧過淨瓶來。僧將淨瓶至。師云。却安舊處著。僧復來問。師云。古佛過去久矣。師云。盲者難以與乎文彩。聵者難以與乎音聲。者僧既不薦來機。國師只成虛設。雲門道無眹迹。扶國師不起。雪竇云。一手指天一手指地。爭得無。也扶國師不起。以拂子畫一畫云。前來葛藤一時畫斷。且道畢竟如何是本身盧舍那。擲拂子下座。又舉保壽和尚開堂日三聖推出一僧公案。師云。眾中商量道。三聖有奔流度刃之作。向平地上湧波瀾。保壽用疾焰過風之機。向虛空裏轟霹靂。二大老各出一隻手。扶竪臨濟正法眼藏。與麼說話要作臨濟兒孫。且緩緩。東禪道。蚊子如何擎大柱。藕絲焉可拄須彌。若是臨濟正法眼藏。端的向二人邊滅却。

Chan Master Guan of Dongchan was styled Xingkong. He ascended the hall and brought up the story: 'Because a monk asked National Teacher Yanguan, "What is the fundamental Locana?" Yanguan said, "Bring the water jar to this old monk." The monk brought the water jar. The master said, "Put it back where it was before." The monk returned to ask again, and the master said, "The ancient Buddha has long passed away."'
The Master said, 'It is difficult to share patterns and colors with the blind; it is difficult to share sounds and voices with the deaf. Since this monk did not comprehend the incoming functional dynamic, the National Teacher's words were merely set forth in vain. Yunmen said, "There are no traces or omens," but that does not prop up the National Teacher. Xuedou said, "One hand points to the sky, one hand points to the earth—how could there be none?" This also does not prop up the National Teacher.' Drawing a line with his whisk, he said, 'The previous vines and entanglements are all cut through at once. Now tell me, in the final analysis, what is the fundamental Locana?' He threw down his whisk and descended from the seat.
He also brought up the gong'an of Baoshou opening his hall, when Sansheng pushed forward a monk. The Master said, 'The assembly discusses it, saying, "Sansheng had the action of crossing a blade in a rushing torrent, surging waves on level ground; Baoshou applied the functional dynamic of swift flames outrunning the wind, crashing thunderclaps in the empty sky. The two great elders each put forth one hand to uphold the True Dharma Eye Treasury of Linji." Talking like that, if you want to be descendants of Linji, just hold on a bit. Dongchan says: How can a mosquito lift a great pillar? How can a lotus thread prop up Sumeru? If it were the True Dharma Eye Treasury of Linji, it would indeed be extinguished at the hands of those two men.'
