Chan Master Po'an of Wolong in Kuizhou was named Zuxian. He was a son of the Wang family of Guang'an. His practice was steady and solid, and his understanding was clear. He once held a divided seat at Lingyin in Hangzhou. A practitioner asked for further instruction, saying, 'The monkey cannot be caught. I pray you offer an instruction.' The Master said, 'What use is catching it? Like the wind blowing on water, ripples naturally form.' At that time, Wuzhun, attending at his side, was greatly awakened. The Master gave a gāthā to a Śūraṅgama lecturer: 'Seeing is still apart from seeing, not true seeing; / Returning fully the eight returnings, there is nothing to return. / Leaves fall into the autumn sky and the mountain's bones appear; / I wonder who recognizes old Gautama?'
