Chan Master Qiyu of Mount Tianping in Xiangzhou. A monk asked, "Whose song does the Master sing? Whose ancestral house style do you inherit?" The Master said, "Striking both ends of the hourglass drum." He asked, "What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?" The Master said, "The radish stone of Zhenzhou." Upāsaka Hancha asked, "What is it like when dharmas are without wavering?" The Master said, "You came from Lufu." The Upāsaka said, "I have not taken a single step." The Master said, "How did you manage to get here?" The Upāsaka said, "Why is the Venerable Upādhyāya talking in his sleep?" The Master said, "I let you off twenty blows of the stick." An official asked, "There is no neighbor to separate us; why do we not see each other?" The Master said, "Whom do you resent?" While the Master was walking along the corridor, he saw a monk and held out his staff to show him. The monk came forward to take it. The Master immediately struck him.
