Chan Master Shunzong of Guoqing at Dongshan in Yuezhou ascended the hall: "When mind arises, various phenomena arise; when mind ceases, various phenomena cease." Holding up his staff, he said, "This is phenomena; which is the ceased mind? If someone can say, I grant that you possess eyes on the crown of your head. If not yet so: the clouds are dark, not knowing whether the sky is early or late; the snow is deep, hard to tell whether the road is high or low. Attend!"
