5.36

潭州興化紹銑禪師泉州人。上堂拈拄杖曰。一大藏教是拭不淨故紙。超佛越祖之談。是誑謼閭閻漢。若論衲僧門下。一點也用不得。作麼生是衲僧門下事。良久曰。多虛不如少實。擊香臺下座。

Chan Master Shaoxian of Xinghua in Tanzhou was a native of Quanzhou. Ascending the hall, he picked up his staff and said, 'The entire great canon of teachings is waste paper for wiping filth. Talk of surpassing the buddhas and transcending the patriarchs is deception aimed at ordinary commoners. If one considers what belongs under the gate of a patch-robed monk, not a single bit of it can be used. What is the business under the gate of a patch-robed monk?' After a long pause he said, 'Abundant emptiness is not as good as a little reality.' He struck the incense stand and descended from his seat.
