Chan Master Zeyao of Guangyin in Fuzhou ascended the hall: 'When the king ascends the precious throne, the barbarians and Chinese share the same wind. Tying up half, breaking three, the phrase where the Buddha's hall turns upside down to hide its body—I will not ask about these. How do you speak the word that breaks through?' Picking up his staff, he said, 'The spring wind opens the bamboo door; / The night rain drips into the flower's heart.' Ascending the hall: 'An ancient said, "One only fears that in being a monk the mind is not clear; when in being a monk the mind is clear, all are bested by the monk." Furthermore, what is the clear mind of all you elders?' After a long pause he said, 'The fisherman sleeps deeply, the spring pool is wide; / White birds do not fly, the boat lies athwart of itself.' A monk asked, 'What is the meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the West?' The Master said, 'East of Chang'an, west of Luoyang.' He asked, 'What is Buddha?' The Master said, 'Fuzhou olives are pointed at both ends.' He asked, 'How was it before the Buddha appeared in the world?' The Master said, 'Hugging the crags, bordering the ravines.' He said, 'How was it after he appeared in the world?' The Master said, 'The forward mountain, the rear mountain.'
