Chan Master Xiaoyue of Letan in Hongzhou was a son of the Zhang family of that prefecture. A monk asked, "The sūtra teachings are like a finger pointing to the moon. I wonder, what is being pointed at?" The Master said, "Please raise your eyes high." [The monk] said, "Before the dawn light has parted, everyone gazes at it; when the sky has brightened, it is merely ordinary." The Master said, "In waning years, ghosts make sport of humans."
