8.30

福州衡山惟禮禪師上堂。若論此事直下難明。三賢罔測。十聖不知。到這裏須高提祖令橫按鏌鎁。佛尚不存纖塵何立。直教須彌粉碎大海焦枯放。一線道與諸人商量。且道商量箇甚麼。良久曰。鹽貴米賤。

Chan Master Wéilǐ of Hèngshān in Fúzhōu ascended the hall: "If discussing this matter, directly here it is difficult to clarify. The three ranks of worthy ones cannot measure it; the ten ranks of sages do not know it. Arriving here, one must hold aloft the ancestral command and brandish Moxie horizontally. When even Buddha does not remain, how could a tiny speck of dust stand? One must cause Sumeru to be pulverized and the great ocean to run dry, releasing a thread of a path to deliberate with you all. And tell me, what shall we deliberate on?" After a pause, he said, "Salt is expensive, rice is cheap."
