Upāsaka Yang Jie of the Ministry of Rites, courtesy name Cigong, styled himself Wuwei. He successively studied under various famous masters, and in his later years traveled with Tianyi. Tianyi frequently cited the dynamic words of old Pang, having him investigate and penetrate deeply. Later, while attending to official sacrifices at Mount Tai, one day at the first crow of the rooster he saw the sun surging up like a platter. Suddenly he experienced a great awakening. He thereupon composed a verse contrasting with [Pang's] 'A son has not married; a daughter has not wed': 'When a son grows up, he must marry; when a daughter matures, she must wed. / What idle time is there to waste / speaking further of the birthless?' He wrote it and sent it to Tianyi, who praised it as excellent. Later he met Chan Master Furong Kai. The Layman said, 'How many years have we been parted, Master?' Rong said, 'Seven years.' The Layman said, 'Did you come to study the Way, or did you come to participate in Chan?' Rong said, 'I do not play this drum and flute.' The Layman said, 'If so, then you vainly roam mountains and rivers, capable of nothing at all.' Rong said, 'It has not been long since we parted, yet you are truly capable of lofty discernment.' The Layman laughed heartily. The Layman had a verse on departing the world: 'Not one thing to long for, / not one thing to cast away. / In the great empty space: / particles, conjunctions, and copulas. / Taking the error as it is, / the Western Land of Ultimate Bliss.'
