真州長蘆應夫廣照禪師滁州蔣氐氏。僧問。古者道。如來禪即許老兄會。祖師禪未夢見在。未審如來禪與祖師禪是同是別。師曰。一箭過新羅。僧擬議。師便喝。問識得衣中寶時如何。師曰。爾試拈出看。僧展一手。師曰。不用指東畫西。寶在甚麼處。曰爭奈學人用得。師曰。爾試用看。僧拂坐具一下。師曰。眾人笑爾。上堂召眾曰。江山繞檻宛如水墨屏風。殿閣凌空麗若神仙洞府。森羅萬象海印交參。一道神光更無遮障。諸人還會麼。良久曰。寥寥天地問獨立望何極參。上堂顧大眾曰。這箇為甚麼擁不聚撥不散。風吹不入水灑不著。火燒不得刀斫不斷。是箇甚麼。眾中莫有釘嘴鐵舌底衲僧。試為山僧定當看。還有麼。良久曰。若無山僧今日失利。久立。

Chan Master Yingfu Guangzhao of Changlu in Zhenzhou was a native of Chuzhou, born to the Jiang family. A monk asked, "An ancient once said: 'Tathāgata Chan is granted for you to understand, elder brother; but of Patriarch Chan, you have not yet dreamed.' May I ask whether Tathāgata Chan and Patriarch Chan are the same or different?" The Master said, "A single arrow passes Silla." The monk hesitated, and the Master gave a shout. A monk asked, "What is it like when one recognizes the jewel within the garment?" The Master said, "Try bringing it out for me to see." The monk opened one hand. The Master said, "No need to point east and paint west. Where is the jewel?" The monk said, "What can be done about this student using it?" The Master said, "Try using it for me to see." The monk shook his sitting mat once. The Master said, "Everyone laughs at you." Ascending the hall, he called to the assembly: "Rivers and mountains encircle the railing, just like an ink-wash screen; halls and pavilions soar into the sky, splendid as caverns of the immortals. The manifold myriad phenomena interpenetrate in the oceanic reflection; a single ray of spiritual light is unobstructed. Do you people understand?" After a long pause, he said, "Vast are heaven and earth; standing alone, what limit to the gaze? Consult!" Ascending the hall, he looked around at the great assembly and said, "Why is this thing something that cannot be gathered by heaping it up, nor dispersed by sweeping it away? Wind cannot blow into it; water cannot sprinkle upon it; fire cannot burn it; knives cannot cut it through. What is this? Among the assembly, is there no patch-robed monk with an iron mouth and nails for teeth? Try settling it for this mountain monk. Is there anyone?" After a long pause, he said, "If not, this mountain monk loses out today. You have stood long."
