Chan Master Dayang Ruhan of Yingzhou. A monk asked, "What is a knocking-and-striking phrase?" The Master said, "Outside the railing, bamboos sway in the wind, startling the recluse from sleep." The monk said, "Then the gate of Avalokiteśvara is wide open." The Master said, "A lion bites people." He then said, "Hearing sound and awakening to the Way, one loses the eyes of Avalokiteśvara; seeing form and illuminating the mind, one obscures the nostrils of Mañjuśrī. One exiting and one entering, half open and half closed. Last night the mud ox wandered into the vast sea, and even up to now it has not been seen to return. Bah!"
