9.15

荊門軍玉泉謂芳禪師蜀人。僧問。從上諸聖以何法示人。師拈起拄杖。僧曰。學人不會。師曰。兩手分付。僧擬議。師便打宿州定林惠琛禪師。僧問。如何是道。師曰。秖在目前。僧曰。為甚麼不見。師曰。瞎。

Chan Master Weifang of Yuquan in Jingmen Commandery was a native of Shu. A monk asked, "With what Dharma have all the sages from of old instructed people?" The Master held up his staff. The monk said, "The student does not understand." The Master said, "Entrusted to you with both hands." As the monk deliberated, the Master hit him. Chan Master Huichen of Dinglin in Suzhou: a monk asked, "What is the Way?" The Master said, "Right before your eyes." The monk said, "Why do I not see it?" The Master said, "Blind!"
