Chan Master Zhicai of Ruiyan in Mingzhou. A monk asked, "What is the phrase that cuts off the myriad streams?" The master said, "Fine." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase that follows the waves and pursues the billows?" The master said, "Follow." [The monk] said, "What is the phrase that covers heaven and earth?" The master said, "Close." [The monk] said, "Having received the master's instruction on the three phrases, how does one distinguish past and present?" The master said, "After this, do not quote [them] mistakenly." Ascending the hall, [the master said], "Because heaven is impartial, it constantly covers; because earth is impartial, it constantly sustains; because the sun and moon are impartial, the four seasons are constantly bright; because nirvāṇa is impartial, the noble and the ordinary are not two; because the human mind is impartial, between high and low there is no dispute." Picking up his staff and tapping it once, he said, "Chan practitioners! Day and night, this staff expounds the Dharma-gate of impartiality for everyone. Do you hear it? If you hear it, I dare guarantee that you have completed the matter of itinerant pilgrimage. If you say you do not hear it, I also grant that the eye atop your crown is upright. Why so? 'This Dharma is impartial, having neither high nor low; this is called anuttarāsamyaksaṃbodhi.'" After a pause, he laughed and said, "The text that follows is lengthy."
