Chan Master Shengqin of Zisheng Cloister in Xiuzhou. A monk asked, 'What is the eye of the correct Dharma?' The Master said, 'The mountains are blue, the waters are green.' The monk asked, 'How does one practice within the four deportments?' The Master said, 'An egret standing in the snow.' The monk said, 'If so, then hearing the bell one holds the bowl, and the sun rises over the balustrade.' The Master said, 'Fish leap in a thousand rivers; dragons soar across ten thousand leagues of clouds.' The monk said, 'What is it ultimately?' The Master said, 'In the mountains, one encounters a ferocious beast; in the heavens, one sees the Star of Literature.' Ascending the hall, [the Master said,] 'Awakening through many lifetimes has nothing to do with the patch-robe; a single point of clarity does not depend on the lamp.' Holding up his staff, he said, 'Atop the staff is the Patriarch; under the lantern is Maitreya. I do not ask about Mount Sumeru's waist being drum-slender; what is your single point of clarity? If you can speak of it, the boundless realm of lands will all rest upon your eyebrows. If you cannot speak of it, how will you cross the bridge of rākṣasas?' After a long pause, he said, 'Waters flow, reflecting the moon in a thousand streams; mountains lock in the clouds of a single ravine.' Striking his staff, he stepped down from his seat.
