Chan Master Kedu of Xitianwang and Xinghua in Luzhou. A monk asked, "The meaning of the Patriarch's coming from the west is not asked about; please, Master, proclaim the phrase for helping people." The master said, "A wisp of cloud returns to the rear cave; a single crane dances in the pure void." The monk said, "In that case, Xinghua has gained its man, and all living beings have someone to rely upon." The master said, "Birds peck the trees of the ancient forest; mountains cross today's clouds." The master then said: "The great Dharma of the Tathāgatas, the wondrous Way of all Buddhas: its true source is tranquil and calm, completely without arising or ceasing. Even if a thousand sages were to appear, it would still be difficult to find a seam or crack. Raising clouds and spitting mist, it pervades sands of the Gaṅgā. Operating horizontally and vertically with precision, wondrously responding without doubt, holding fast and letting go, rolling up and unfolding at ease—opening the eyes of humans and devas, expanding the mind-source of Buddhas and Patriarchs. All phenomena are present before us, lacking nothing at all. As it is said, everyone is fully endowed, each completely perfected; without expending the slightest mental effort, naturally standing like a thousand-fathom cliff." After a good while, he gave a shout.
