Chan Master Huiweng Wuming of Jingci [Monastery] in Hangzhou was a native of Fuzhou. Ascending the hall, he cited: 'A monk from Jiashan’s assembly arrived at Gaoting. Just as he bowed, Gaoting hit him at once. The monk said, "I have come specially to bow in homage; why do you hit me, Master?" and bowed again. Gaoting hit him again and drove him out. The monk returned and related this to Jiashan. Jiashan said, "Do you understand?" He replied, "I do not understand." Jiashan said, "Fortunate it is that you do not understand! If you had understood, Jiashan's mouth would have been struck dumb." Ying'an brought this up and said, "Gaoting could not contain himself on that occasion, but alas, his staff was released too quickly! If this monk had been a real fellow at that moment, not to mention Gaoting and Jiashan, even if Great Master Bodhidharma had stepped forth, he would have chopped him into three pieces! For what reason? When a family is rich, it produces filial sons; when a state is flourishing, it has resourceful ministers." Ying'an also commented: "The tactical operations of Gaoting and Jiashan were each appropriately suited; only the person in the middle was slightly inferior. Ying'an speaking like this is also like a Gong County teapot."' The Master once compiled the *Liandeng huiyao* (Essentials of the Linked Lamps) to transmit throughout the monastic groves.
