After reciting the verse, the Venerable One immediately entered the lion's athletic samādhi, vaulted into empty space to the height of seven tāla trees, returned to his seat, transformed into fire, and incinerated himself. Devas and humans grieved deeply, their lamentation moving heaven and earth. That time was during the reign of King Xiang of the Zhou. Vasumitra then gathered his relics, stored them in a casket of the seven jewels, erected a stupa, placed them in its upper tier, and made offerings to them.
