An appraisal says: Although Venerable Can did not speak of his family name and home village at first, he was in the world for more than thirty more years afterward; could he have completely kept his mouth shut without mentioning them briefly? This is questionable. I say: I have examined Fang’s stele, which says: ‘The Great Master once said to Daoxin: “If someone asks, do not say that you obtained the Dharma from my place.”’ This clearly shows that the Venerable kept to himself most strictly. A consummate person regards the traces of things as an encumbrance to the Great Way, and so forgets his mind; when he even wished to leave behind the lineage of the True Dharma, how much less would he be willing to pay heed to mundane matters like his family name and native land!
