He further said to Ren: “Formerly, during the Wude era, I once traveled to Mount Lu. Ascending its highest peak, I saw this Mount Potou: above it were purple clouds like a canopy, and below it arose white vapor, dividing horizontally into six branches. What kind of auspicious omen do you consider this to be?” Ren said: “This must surely be an omen that after the upādhyāya, a branch of the Buddha-Dharma will branch out horizontally.” The Venerable One said: “Excellent! You are able to understand it.” Shortly afterward, he bathed, sat in meditation, and passed away. His worldly age was seventy-two. This was on the fourth day of the ninth month in the xinhai year, the second year of the Yonghui era [651 CE]. Three years after his burial, the door of his stūpa suddenly opened of itself one day, and the Venerable One’s true body appeared majestic as though alive. During the Dali era, Emperor Daizong bestowed the posthumous title Chan Master Dayi, and the stūpa was named Ciyun.
