尊者見賞之曰。後世若依。此修行亦得勝果。勉眾誦之。慧能適聞。乃問其誦者曰。此誰所為。曰此神秀上座之偈。大師善之。當得付法。汝豈知乎。能曰。此言雖善而未了。其流輩皆笑以能為妄言。能尋作偈和之。其夕假筆於童子。並秀偈而書之曰。

When the Venerable One saw it, he praised it, saying: “If future generations cultivate according to this, they will also attain supreme fruits.” He encouraged the assembly to recite it. Huineng happened to hear it, and asked the reciter: “Who composed this?” [The reciter] said: “This is the verse of Senior Seat Shenxiu. The Great Master praised it, and he will surely receive the transmission of the Dharma. Don't you know?” Neng said: “Although these words are good, they are not yet complete.” His peers all laughed, thinking Neng’s words were boastful nonsense. Neng soon composed a verse in response. That night, borrowing a brush from a boy, he wrote beside Xiu’s verse, saying:
