The Venerable Vasumitra was a native of Northern India. His family name was Bharadvāja. He regularly wore clean clothes and carried a wine vessel, wandering in the villages and lanes while humming and whistling at his ease. People could hardly fathom him, and some called him mad. When he met the Venerable Miccaka and clarified his past conditions, he threw away the vessel and followed him to leave the household life. Soon afterwards, he received the transmission of the Dharma. After Miccaka had passed away, he broadened his teaching and transformation. When he arrived in the country of Kamara, just as he was performing great superior deeds, suddenly there was a wise man who hurried before his seat and said of himself, "My name is Buddhanandi; I have come to debate doctrine with the Venerable One." Vasumitra said, "Kind sir, debating is not doctrine, and doctrine is not debated. If you intend to debate doctrine, it is ultimately not doctrinal debate." Buddhanandi, considering his principle superior, willingly submitted to him, and said, "I wish to seek the Way and partake of the taste of amṛta." The Venerable One then ordained him, specially commanding noble beings of the four fruits to administer the precepts to him. Before long, he instructed him, saying, "The Tathāgata's treasury of the eye of the true Dharma is now entrusted to you. You must transmit it and carefully avoid severing it. Listen to my verse:"
