"The master’s life has spanned a hundred years; / At eighty, you committed wrongs. / It was because you drew close to the sovereign / That you perfumed your practice and entered the Way. / Although endowed with a little wisdom, / You held greatly to self and other; / Toward the worthy ones you encountered, / You never gave rise to cherished respect. / After twenty years of meritorious deeds, / Your mind was still not tranquil. / Through cleverness and condescension / You were brought to this pass. / To suffer the king’s disrespect / Was the karmic retribution thus incurred. / If from now on you are neither remiss nor negligent, / Before long you will accomplish extraordinary wisdom. / All sages preserve this in mind, / And the Tathāgata does so likewise."
