In the eighth generation from Dajian: Chan Master Wenyan of Mount Yunmen in Shaozhou. He was a native of Jiaxing in Suzhou, surnamed Zhang. Naturally sharp-witted and perceptive, even as a child he was unlike ordinary youths. He left home and took the precepts, and studying the sūtras, vinaya, and treatises, before long he had mastered them all. When he traveled to visit good spiritual friends, at his first meeting with the Venerable Chen of Muzhou, he thoroughly penetrated the ancestral principle. Soon afterward, he received confirmation from Chan Master Cun of Xuefeng. From then on, he concealed his radiance and mingled unnoticed with the multitude. Later, journeying south, he came to the Dharma assembly of Chan Master Min of Lingshu in Shaoyang. Min was an extraordinary man, reputed to possess prescient knowledge. Seeing Yan, he regarded him with exceptional respect and appointed him head seat of the assembly. When [Min] passed away, he left behind a letter recommending him to the ruler of Guangzhou, of the Liu clan, who commanded the Chan master to succeed him in leading that dwelling. Later, the Liu clan further renovated the great monastery of Yunmen and moved Yan to reside there. His fame thereupon spread far and wide, and students from the four directions turned to him like water flowing downhill. Yet his manner of teaching was steep and swift, and his guidance toward the Way was ever more profound. Today, the realm esteems it, calling it the Yunmen school. In the tenth generation from Dajian was Chan Master Qingliang Wenyi of Jinling. He was a native of Yuhang, surnamed Lu. From the start he had lofty aspirations. After taking the precepts, he studied the vinaya under Vinaya Master Xijue, and also explored Confucian learning, showing impressive literary accomplishments. Jue once regarded him and said, "This is the Ziyou and Zixia of our school." Soon turning his efforts toward the ancestral vehicle, he went to the Dharma assembly of Changqing in Futang. Before he had stayed there long, he was already esteemed by the community. In his later years he traveled widely again. Meeting with rain on the road, he and his companions rested at Dizang Cloister to the west of that prefecture. There, calling upon Chan Master Chen, he attained the Dharma essentials. He then stayed in a hermitage at Ganchezhou in Fuzhou. Later, led again by his companions to travel through Jiangbiao, he reached Linchuan, where the local people invited him to dwell at the Chongshou Jingshe. An appraisal states: Once the orthodox lineage reached Dajian, its transmission became widespread, whereupon students each pursued the teachings of their own masters. Thereupon, [opinions] under heaven diverged, and they vied to establish their own traditions. Hence there were the so-called Guiyang, Caodong, Linji, Yunmen, and Fayan [houses]; [lineages] such as these cannot all be enumerated. Moreover, the followers of the three houses of Yunmen, Linji, and Fayan are especially flourishing today; Guiyang has already died out, and Caodong barely survives, lingering like an isolated spring drawn upon during a great drought. Yet as for their flourishing and decline, how could the Dharma possess strength and weakness? It is simply whether subsequent generations succeeded each other with the right persons or not. Does not the Classic say, "If it is not the right person, the Way does not act in vain"?
