In the tenth generation from Dajian was Chan Master Qingliang Wenyi of Jinling. He was a native of Yuhang, surnamed Lu. From the start he had lofty aspirations. After taking the precepts, he studied the vinaya under Vinaya Master Xijue, and also explored Confucian learning, showing impressive literary accomplishments. Jue once regarded him and said, "This is the Ziyou and Zixia of our school." Soon turning his efforts toward the ancestral vehicle, he went to the Dharma assembly of Changqing in Futang. Before he had stayed there long, he was already esteemed by the community. In his later years he traveled widely again. Meeting with rain on the road, he and his companions rested at Dizang Cloister to the west of that prefecture. There, calling upon Chan Master Chen, he attained the Dharma essentials. He then stayed in a hermitage at Ganchezhou in Fuzhou. Later, led again by his companions to travel through Jiangbiao, he reached Linchuan, where the local people invited him to dwell at the Chongshou Jingshe. From then on, students flocked to him in increasing numbers. The ruler of the Southern Tang, of the Li clan, heard of his reputation and invited him into the capital, putting him in charge of the great Qingliang Monastery. The court treated him with ever greater honor, and followers from all directions came to him in ever greater numbers.
