第四祖優波毱多。吒利國人。姓首陀氏。師商那和修。出家得道。有異迹。號為無相好佛。度人最眾。所記其人籌數盈溢石室。將入滅。遂以法付其弟子提多迦。說偈曰。

The Fourth Patriarch, Upagupta, was a man of the country of Pāṭali, of the Śūdra caste. He took Śāṇakavāsa as his master, left home, and attained the Way. Possessing extraordinary traces, he was called the "Buddha Without Marks." He delivered the greatest number of people; the tallies recording those people overflowed a stone chamber. About to enter extinction, he then transmitted the Dharma to his disciple Dhītika, speaking a verse, saying:
