第三十一祖道信。蘄陽人。姓司馬氏。以頴悟得法於三祖。至唐初乃居蘄之雙峯山。途中得奇童。度為弟子。遂名之曰弘忍。尋以法并前祖信衣付之。後乃滅度。其傳法偈曰。
The thirty-first patriarch, Daoxin, was a man of Qiyang whose surname was Sima. Through his exceptional discernment he attained the Dharma from the third patriarch. In the early Tang dynasty, he resided at Mount Shuangfeng in Qi. On the road, he found an extraordinary boy, ordained him as a disciple, and named him Hongren. Soon he transmitted the Dharma along with the former patriarchs' robe of proof to him, and later entered extinction. His verse of Dharma transmission said:
